The town has pedestrianised walkways and pavement café bars, numerous High Street retailers, and one of the oldest and largest open air markets in the country. The major supermarket groups have branches in or around the town.

There are three public leisure centres, including Lings Forum at nearby Weston Favell, which has a health and fitness gym, swimming pool and arthouse cinema, and to the north of the town there is Mounts Baths, with pool, Art Deco health suite and Turkish hot room. Also popular are the international motor racing raceway at Brafield, and Nene White Water Centre for whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking. A canal museum and picturesque waterside villages can be found along the River Nene.
